Als klein jongetje was ik al helemaal in de ban van gamen. Voornamelijk de zogeheten “fighting games” trokken mijn interesse meteen. In die tijd draaide het nog om knopjes zo snel mogelijk indrukken en hopen dat het genoeg was om te winnen. Soms zat het mee en soms zat het tegen.

Ruim 13 jaar heb ik geen gameconsole aangeraakt, totdat ik ontdekte dat er recentelijk een nieuw deel was uitgekomen van het spel “Mortal Kombat”. Noem het impulsief, maar het kind in mij werd wakker en ik besloot een playstation 3 samen met het spel te kopen. Tot mijn genoegen was mijn broertje net zo enthousiast. Na urenlange sessies tegen elkaar en met een redelijk opgebouwde dosis zelfvertrouwen besloten we online te gaan spelen. Het spel kreeg een extra dimensie en een nieuwe wereld ging open voor ons. Het werd nog leuker, maar er werd ook steeds meer van ons gevraagd naarmate de tijd verstreek. Door steeds tegen andere en betere tegenstanders te spelen werden we gedwongen ook zelf beter te gaan spelen. Van nature hou ik van aanvallend spelen en constant vooruit willen bewegen (ook al werkte dat soms niet). Door gespeelde matches samen te bespreken en zelf te analyseren wat er gebeurde werden we langzaam steeds beter. Naarmate tijd verstreek werden andere zaken belangrijk zoals: patronen leren herkennen, aanpassen en inschattingsvermogen. Ondertussen zijn we ongeveer vier jaar verder en geniet ik nog steeds evenveel van deze hobby. Natuurlijk kan het een keer in de zoveel tijd voorkomen dat ik niet op tijd stop, maar zelfs dat is nog geen ramp. Mits het geen verslaving wordt natuurlijk. Sommige hobby’s uit de kindertijd kunnen nog steeds hetzelfde plezier bieden. Zeker bij deze hobby word ik altijd herinnerd aan de bekende zin “boys will be boys”.
